Living With Emotions Classes

Class flyer:  living-with-emotionsrev2023.pdf

What is Living With Emotions?

Living With Emotions is a foundational, integrated 12 session emotion skills class providing skills and concepts for understanding and effectively responding to our human emotions, thoughts and sensations.  Theory and therapy models informing the class include several cognitive behavior therapies, including those incorporating mindfulness.  Examples of therapies integrated include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), traditional DBT (DBT) and Radically Open Dialectical Therapy (RO DBT).

Why a foundational, integrated emotion skills class?

I have previously taught Living With Emotions as well as RO DBT skills classes, the latter specific to emotion over control.  Although RO DBT is an outstanding choice for clear over control tendencies, the rationale for a foundational emotion skills class is to provide a strong primary understanding of emotions and their functions to enhance receptivity, connection and release of them.  The class also pinpoints the essence of "coping" -- what it is and is not.  Since emotions and thoughts are frequently intertwined, and since thoughts may contain limiting distortions or biases, participants will also learn how to effectively recognize and respond to these private mental events, too.  Finally, over the last two decades, psychotherapy has advanced in illuminating the bi-directional nature of mind-body experiences so as to identify expanded ways of responding helpfully to our neurobiology.  All together, this body of knowledge and skills serve to increase flexibility of mind for optimum wellness and connection to ourselves and others.

What are the classes like?

Living With Emotions is taught at my Lake Bellevue office.  Classes of at least 5 but not more than 9 participants meet for 1-1/2 hours once weekly and include a brief mindfulness experience, homework review from the previous week, presentation of a concept and skill and explanation of homework for the next class.  We take a 5-6 minute break at the 45 minute mark.  The class is taught from a manual I create and that each participant receives on the first day of class.  The manual contains the syllabus, schedule, all homework sheets and several handouts from which I will teach.

How do I register?

All prospective participants need an intake session to determine that the class will likely be a good fit and meet expectations.  The intake session is charged separately from the class fee.   If there is an insurance-eligible diagnostic code and you have out of network benefits, you may submit my superbill reflecting your payment and containing information needed that I will furnish you the day after the intake appointment.   The 50 minute intake appointment fee is $165.
